Career Compass - Career Paths

Career Paths surfaces possible opportunities for career movement, not just the career paths that have current open positions.

Career Paths surfaces possible opportunities for career movement, not just the career paths that have current open positions. Each company structures their roles and departments differently, but most organizations will group roles according to the following classifications:

  • Job Family (Ex. Engineering, Financial)

  • Job Functions (Ex. Software Engineer, Accountant)

  • Job Title (Ex. Software Engineer 2, Senior Accountant)

Career Paths are created from actual movements at your company, influenced by your organization’s job architecture, and augmented with additional movements that have happened within your industry. Depending on your organization and role, there will be a few sections within career paths under Explore other roles.

Note: Each company has unique configurations. This article covers the capabilities within Career Compass regardless of whether your organization is using them or not.

Current Role and Path

Your current role and roles that you can reach within your current Job Group or Job Function are listed as “Next Level” or “+2 Level.” For example, if your title is currently Software Engineer 1, then Software Engineer 2 could be listed as a "Next Level" attainable job within your current path.

When you select a role, a slide-out will appear to the right with additional details. These details include the role description, skill requirements, career pathway with levels, suggested connections with colleagues in that field, learning recommendations, and any open positions.

Skills that you have are marked with a check ✔️. Skills you want are marked with a heart ❤️. Click on a skill to see a description, related skills, any recommended learning content to develop this skill, as well as roles that use this skill. Select I have it or I want it to add the skill to your Profile. Skills that you want will surface recommended learning opportunities within Career Compass.

Promoted Roles

Your Admins can highlight unconventional, exciting, or potentially high value career paths for you to discover within this section.

Career Transitions

You can find the Career Transitions section within the tab Explore other roles. Career Transitions shows roles that will transition you away from your current path. These roles are populated based on the career moves of your peers. If somebody has previously transitioned to or from your role, then their pathway will be shown here.

The Career Transitions section will display roles outside of your current path. These can be jobs that are within your current Job Family but within different functions, or jobs that are outside of your current Job Family altogether. The first set of boxes highlight roles in the same Job Family you are currently in but within a different Job Function. The last set of boxes are related roles that are in different Job Families.

You can find the Related Roles section within the tab Explore other roles. Related Roles shows roles that are within your Job Family. This path may be most useful when your current job is highly specialized and has few transition points or if your HRIS does not have historic role transition data. This section will bring to light roles that have previously been held by individuals within your Job Family. Jobs listed here can give you an opportunity to do a hard pivot into other areas of your company.

Saved Roles

The Saved tab within Career Paths will show any Career Paths you have saved with the bookmark icon or entered in as a Target Role within the Career Interests section of your Profile.
